Tianjin University of Technology is a multidisciplinary university with a focus on engineering and a combination of engineering and science, and the coordinated development of engineering, science, management, art, and other disciplines. Formerly known as Tianjin Institute of Technology, the school began to enroll undergraduates in the name of Tianjin University Polytechnic Branch in 1979, and was formally established in 1981 with the approval of the State Council. In 1996, the former Tianjin Institute of Technology merged with the three undergraduate colleges of the former Tianjin University Branch, Tianjin University Mechanical and Electrical Branch, and Tianjin University Metallurgical Branch to form the new Tianjin Institute of Technology. Approved by the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Tianjin University of Technology in 2004.
The school is located at No.391 Binshui West Road, Xiqing District, Tianjin, with a total area of 1,594,200 square meters and a building area of 769,200 square meters.
