ShanghaiTech University (ShanghaiTech University, ShanghaiTech) is a full-time general higher education institution jointly organized and jointly built by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and under the supervision of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. It was established on September 30, 2013. The Ministry of Education approved the formal establishment. The school is committed to serving the national economic and social development strategy, cultivating scientific and technological innovation and entrepreneurial talents, providing scientific and technological solutions and playing the role of think tanks, actively participating in the reform of higher education, participating in the construction of the Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Center, and striving to build a small-scale, high-level, international A research-oriented and innovative university.

The school is located in the middle area of Shanghai-Pudong New Area-Zhangjiang High-tech Park. It is an important part of the Zhangjiang Comprehensive National Science Center under construction. The Shanghai Microsatellite Engineering Center, the New Drug Research and Development Platform of the Shanghai Institute of Medicine of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other national-level scientific facilities and scientific research institutions are integrated, and they are organically connected with the industry and investment circles of Zhangjiang High-tech Zone. The school’s new campus covers an area of about 900 acres, with a total construction area of about 700,000 square meters. The campus construction fully reflects the planning and design concept of "student-teacher-oriented, teaching and research integration, green environmental protection and intelligence". It will be basically completed at the end of 2015 and fully invested in 2016 Use.

The school focuses on science and engineering. It has established the School of Material Science and Technology, the School of Life Science and Technology, the School of Information Science and Technology, the School of Entrepreneurship and Management, and the School of Creativity and Arts. The school established the Institute of Immunochemistry, the Institute of iHuman, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and the General Education Center.

In accordance with the teacher-student ratio of 1:10–1:12, the school builds a team of 1,000 professors, and plans to recruit 500 permanent professors and 500 distinguished professors. Among them, permanent professors mainly come from well-known scholars and outstanding young scholars from internationally renowned universities, and the permanent professor system (Tenure System) is implemented; distinguished professors mainly come from outstanding scientists from the Institute of Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and famous professors at home and abroad. As of September 2018, the school has selected 485 professors (293 specially-appointed professors, 173 permanent professors in place, and 19 permanent professors accepting offers). Including 4 Nobel Prize winners, 11 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 6 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 3 members of the Royal Society, 34 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 94 members of the "Outstanding Youth" .

He has grown into top-notch talents engaged in scientific discovery, high-tech innovation and entrepreneurship in emerging industries.

The training of undergraduates follows the principles of “wide-calibre, thick foundation, small scale, and internationalization”, and highlights the characteristics of “general education (general education), professional (professional talents), and new (innovation and entrepreneurship)”. Undergraduate training system consisting of general education and personalized education, professional curriculum system and standards are in line with world-class universities, and international classic textbooks are selected; all undergraduates must take mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and information, and lay a solid foundation in science and engineering; strengthen Chinese civilization, world civilization, science and technology civilization education, pay attention to innovation and entrepreneurship education. The school equips each undergraduate with a tutor to provide guidance for students in many aspects such as study life, innovative practice, and career planning. The school focuses on integrating innovative practices into the entire training process: In 2017, all 2016 undergraduates went to 13 bases across the country to carry out summer social practice activities, and all 2015 undergraduates and some graduate students went to 50 companies and parks to carry out summer industrial practice activities. 30% of sophomores, juniors and undergraduates participate in scientific research and practice activities in college/institute laboratories. The school is committed to building an international learning environment and providing outstanding students with sufficient opportunities for overseas study and exchange: In 2017, 93 undergraduates went to the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Chicago, the University of Padua, and Yale University for summer courses and exchanges. . In the fall of 2017, our school sent 21 outstanding undergraduates to Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study and exchange professional courses for one semester or one academic year.

In June 2018, our school welcomed its first undergraduate graduates. Among the 199 undergraduate graduates, about 38% chose to study abroad for postgraduate studies. The graduates who have obtained the admission letter for further studies have received offers from more than 2 world-renowned universities, including Harvard University, University of Chicago, Columbia University, Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, Cornell University, and University of Washington, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Southern California, Emory University, Carnegie Mellon University, New York University and other internationally renowned universities. Among the graduates studying abroad, 5 entered the global TOP10 colleges and universities; 15 entered the global TOP20 colleges and universities; 51 entered the global TOP100 colleges and universities for further education, accounting for 26% of the total graduates. About 34% of graduates choose to study for graduate students in domestic universities such as Shanghai University of Science and Technology, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University; about 20% of graduates choose direct employment, working units include General Electric, Novartis, AMD, Hehui Optoelectronics, Shanghai Securities, Bank of Shanghai, Henkel and other well-known companies at home and abroad; about 8% of the students postpone their graduation due to various reasons. It is worth mentioning that the scientific research strength of the first undergraduates should also not be underestimated. As of May 2018, 17 undergraduates of the 2014 grade have published 20 papers in well-known academic journals or international conferences as first authors and co-authors.

The cultivation of postgraduates focuses on academic Ph.D. and some applied masters.
