Shanghai Ocean University is a multidisciplinary applied research university. The Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the State Oceanic Administration, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs jointly established a university. In September 2017, it was selected as the national "World-class Disciplinary Construction University".

The predecessor of the school was the Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School founded in 1912 by Zhang Jian and Huang Yanpei. It has gone through the school names of National Central University Aquatic Products School, Shanghai Wusong Aquatic Products College, and Shanghai Aquatic Products College. In 1952, it was upgraded to Shanghai Fisheries College, the first undergraduate aquatic products university in China. In 1972, it moved south to Jimei, Xiamen, and was renamed Xiamen Fisheries College. Moved back to Shanghai in 1979, restored Shanghai Fisheries College, and retained Xiamen Fisheries College. In 1985, it was renamed Shanghai Fisheries University. In 2008, it was renamed Shanghai Ocean University.
The school has 14 colleges (departments), with nearly 12,000 full-time undergraduates and more than 3,600 full-time graduate students. In 2019, there were 802 international students enrolled in the school from 83 countries and regions. There are more than 1,200 faculty members, including more than 800 teaching and research personnel, more than 490 senior professional technical positions, and more than 450 doctoral tutors and master tutors on campus. The school currently has 43 undergraduate majors, including 5 national specialty majors. The food science and engineering major has obtained IFT food major international certification, 6 national-level first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 2 municipal-level majors. The school currently has two campuses: Shanghai Pudong New Area Huchenghuan Road Campus and Yangpu District Jungong Road Campus, as well as 386 acres of Binhai Base and 56.7 acres of Xiangshan Science and Education Base.
