Shanghai Ocean University is a multidisciplinary applied research university. The Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the State Oceanic Administration, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs jointly established a university. In September 2017, it was selected as the national "World-class Disciplinary Construction University".
School motto: Diligent, simple and faithful, established on September 1, 1914. The original intention of the school: wherever the fishing world is, where the sea power is. School-running tradition: Write the thesis on the oceans and seas of the world and the rivers and lakes of the motherland.
The predecessor of the school was the Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School founded in 1912 by Zhang Jian and Huang Yanpei. It has gone through the school names of National Central University Aquatic Products School, Shanghai Wusong Aquatic Products College, and Shanghai Aquatic Products College. In 1952, it was upgraded to Shanghai Fisheries College, the first undergraduate aquatic products university in China. In 1972, it moved south to Jimei, Xiamen, and was renamed Xiamen Fisheries College. Moved back to Shanghai in 1979, restored Shanghai Fisheries College, and retained Xiamen Fisheries College. In 1985, it was renamed Shanghai Fisheries University. In 2008, it was renamed Shanghai Ocean University.
The school has 14 colleges (departments), with nearly 12,000 full-time undergraduates and more than 3,600 full-time graduate students. In 2019, there were 802 international students enrolled in the school from 83 countries and regions. There are more than 1,200 faculty members, including more than 800 teaching and research personnel, more than 490 senior professional technical positions, and more than 450 doctoral tutors and master tutors on campus. There are 26 national-level talents, 173 provincial and ministerial-level talents, 2 members of the 7th Disciplinary Appraisal Group of the State Council, 57 people enjoying special allowances from the State Council, and 10 scientists in the modern agricultural industry technology system of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The school currently has 43 undergraduate majors, including 5 national specialty majors. The food science and engineering major has obtained IFT food major international certification, 6 national-level first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 2 municipal-level majors. The school currently has two campuses: Shanghai Pudong New Area Huchenghuan Road Campus and Yangpu District Jungong Road Campus, as well as 386 acres of Binhai Base and 56.7 acres of Xiangshan Science and Education Base. Among them, the main campus Huchenghuan Road campus covers an area of about 1,600 acres, with a planned construction area of 586,000 square meters. It has a modern campus network and has built the China Ocean Fisheries Data Center and the Marine Science Supercomputing Center. The sponsored "Journal of Fisheries" and "Journal of Shanghai Ocean University" are the core Chinese journals, the core journals of Chinese science and technology and the source journals of the Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD). The school has close exchanges and cooperation with universities and international organizations in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia and other countries (regions). It has signed cooperation agreements with 125 universities and scientific research institutions in 31 countries and regions, and has signed cooperation agreements with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the Asian Fisheries Society.
