The school's predecessors were the Shanghai Jiaotong University Mechanical and Electrical Branch, the Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology Branch (incorporated into the Shanghai Jiaotong University Mechanical and Electrical Branch in 1984) and the Shanghai Textile Institute Branch (renamed as East China Textile Institute Branch in 1980). In 1985, Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology was established on the basis of the above-mentioned institutions. In 2003, Shanghai Advanced Technical School (founded in 1951) was incorporated into Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology as a whole.
