Shanghai Normal University is a key construction university in Shanghai. It is a comprehensive university with a coordinated development of liberal arts, sciences, engineering, and arts with the characteristics of teacher education.
The school was established in 1954 and became an undergraduate institution in 1956. In 1981, it was identified as the first batch of master's degree-granting units by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. In 1986, it was approved as a doctoral degree-granting unit. In 2017, it was selected as the implementation institution of the Excellent Teacher Training Program of the Ministry of Education. .
