East China Normal University

East China Normal University is a comprehensive research university sponsored by the state, supervised by the Ministry of Education, and jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. The school was established on October 16, 1951, based on Daxia University (1924) and Guanghua University (1925). At the same time, it was transferred to some departments of St. John’s University, Fudan University, Tongji University and Zhejiang University. , Founded on the original site of Daxia University. In 1959, the school was designated by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China as one of the 16 key colleges and universities in the country. In 1972, the school merged with Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Sport University and other institutions and changed its name to Shanghai Normal University. In 1978, the school was again recognized as a national key university. In 1980, the school restored the name of East China Normal University. In 1986, the school was approved by the State Council to become one of the 33 higher education institutions that established graduate schools. In 1996, it was included in the "211 Project" national key construction university ranks. From 1997 to 1998, Shanghai Preschool Teachers College, Shanghai Institute of Education and Shanghai Second Education College were merged successively. In 2002, in accordance with the strategic deployment of Shanghai's university layout and structural adjustment, the school initiated the Minhang campus planning and construction, and in 2006 the main body was relocated to the Minhang campus, forming a school-running pattern of "one school, two districts, and joint development". In 2006, the Ministry of Education and Shanghai decided to focus on the construction of East China Normal University, and the school entered the ranks of the national "985 Project" universities. In 2017, the school entered the ranks of A-class universities in the country's world-class university construction, fully embarking on a new journey to build a first-class university rooted in China.

   As of March 2018, there are 14,856 full-time undergraduate students; 2,969 doctoral students and 16,327 master students; and 2,274 international students (degree students). The school has 4,128 faculty members, including 2,278 full-time teachers. There are 1,871 professors and teachers with other senior professional titles, including 13 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering (including dual-appointed academicians), 24 members of the "Thousand Talents Program" of the Central Organization Department, and distinguished professors of the "Changjiang Scholars Award Program" of the Ministry of Education. 32 lecture professors, 33 national "Outstanding Youth Science Fund" winners, 9 national "Ten Thousand Talents Program" leading talents and national teaching teachers selected, 11 national-level candidates of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security "New Century Hundred and Thousand Talents Project" People. The main campuses of the school are Minhang Campus (Address: No. 500 Dongchuan Road, Shanghai) and Zhongshan North Road Campus (Address: No. 3663, Zhongshan North Road, Shanghai). The campus covers a total area of about 207 hectares.


   The school has 30 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degree, 37 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degree, 20 kinds of master's professional degrees, and doctoral degree of education can be granted, 25 post-doctoral research stations and 83 undergraduate majors. The school sponsors and undertakes 23 Chinese academic journals and 4 English academic journals. The libraries of the two campuses have a total of 4.638 million printed documents and 144 various electronic document databases (433 sub-libraries). The school has established a basic education group, and currently has 28 affiliated primary and secondary schools and kindergartens (officially enrolled and run schools) run by itself and in cooperation. School continuing education adheres to the separation of management and operation, actively implements national mandatory plan projects, cultivates high-quality non-academic education projects, and develops a school-based research and training network platform.


The school focuses on international cooperation and exchanges, and has established strategic partnerships with world-renowned universities such as the French Normal University Group, New York University, the University of Virginia, Cornell University, the University of Queensland in Australia, the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, and the University of Tokyo in Japan. The universities and scientific research institutions have signed academic cooperation and exchange agreements. The establishment of a joint graduate school with the French Normal University Group; the establishment of the Sino-French Institute of Science and Society with the French Normal University of Lyon and the French National Research Center; the Shanghai New York University, co-founded with the New York University of the United States, is the first Chinese institution with independent legal personality A university co-founded by the United States; the Asia-Europe Business School in cooperation with the Lyon Business School in France; and the Joint Research Institute for Translational Science and Technology in cooperation with the University of Haifa in Israel. The school has an international Chinese language teacher training base subordinate to Hanban, and builds 8 Confucius Institutes as a Chinese partner institution.
