The name of Fudan University is taken from the "Sun and Moon Guanghua, Dan Fudan Xi" in "Shangshu Dazhuan". It was founded in 1905 and was originally named Fudan Public School. In 1917, it was named Fudan University. It was the first higher education institution independently founded by the Chinese. . The predecessor of Shanghai Medical University was the National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine founded in 1927. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University. At present, the school has 11 disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, and art. It is a world-renowned and top comprehensive research university in China .
At present, Fudan University has 32 directly affiliated hospitals (departments) and 16 affiliated hospitals (5 of which are in preparation). The school has 74 undergraduate majors, 35 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 41 first-level discipline master degree authorization points, 2 doctoral professional degree authorization points, 27 master professional degree authorization points, and 35 post-doctoral research stations.
