Tongji University

Tongji University has a long history and outstanding reputation. It is one of the earliest national universities in China and a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and jointly established with Shanghai. After 110 years of development, Tongji University has become a comprehensive, research-oriented and international university with distinctive characteristics and greater influence at home and abroad, and its comprehensive strength ranks among the top universities in China.

The predecessor of Tongji University was the German Medical School founded by German doctor Erich Baolong in Shanghai in 1907, and it was renamed Tongji German Medical School the following year. In 1912, together with the newly established Tongji German Literature and Engineering School, it was collectively called Tongji German Medical and Engineering School. It was taken over by the Chinese in 1917 and successively changed its name to Tongji Medical School and Private Tongji Medical School. It was named Tongji University in 1923 and became a national university in 1927. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War in 1937, Tongji University moved to Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Yunnan and other places successively after six relocations. In 1940, it moved to the ancient town of Lizhuang in Yibin, Sichuan, and persisted in running the school. After moving back to Shanghai in 1946, it developed into a comprehensive university known for its five major colleges of science, engineering, medicine, literature, and law.

In the nationwide adjustment of faculties and departments that began in 1949, Tongji University’s original superior disciplines such as liberal arts, law, medicine, science, machinery, electrical engineering, shipbuilding, surveying and mapping may support other universities or relocate to the mainland as a whole. At the same time, the civil engineering and construction related disciplines of more than 10 universities across the country have gathered in Tongji, making it the largest and most comprehensive engineering university in the field of civil engineering in China. After 1978, the school implemented "two transformations"—resuming exchanges with Germany from a closed school to an open school, and from a civil engineering-based engineering university to a polytechnic university with science and engineering as the mainstay. In 1996, Shanghai Institute of Urban Construction and Shanghai Institute of Building Materials Industry were merged and listed as a national "211 Project" construction university. In 2000, it merged with Shanghai Railway University to form a new Tongji University. In 2002, it was listed as a national "985 Project" construction university. In 2003, Shanghai Aviation Industry School was placed under the management of Tongji University. In 2004, it was listed as a middle management university. In 2017, it was listed as a national world-class university construction university.

Tongji University always regards the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents as its lofty mission and responsibility, takes undergraduate education as the foundation of the school, and postgraduate education as the way to strengthen the school. After studying and nurturing at the university level, a student has the comprehensive characteristics of "general education foundation, professional quality, innovative thinking, practical ability, global vision, and social responsibility", and becomes a social pillar and professional elite leading the future. Since its establishment, the school has successively trained more than 300,000 graduates and created a large number of outstanding politicians, scientists, educators, social activists, entrepreneurs, medical experts, and engineering technical experts. Among the alumni, more than 140 were elected academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Tongji University has built the world’s largest "multifunctional vibration experiment center", the first domestic "ground transportation wind tunnel center", the first domestic "urban rail transit comprehensive test platform", and the first domestic "submarine observation research center" A number of major scientific research platforms such as experimental bases. Has undertaken a series of national major special projects and major engineering scientific research, and achieved key technologies for large-span bridges, structural earthquake and disaster prevention technologies, urban traffic intelligent guidance, urban sewage treatment, new energy vehicle research and development, localized smart greenhouses, and remote sensing of spatial information , Ocean Drilling, Molecular Genetics of Atrial Fibrillation, etc.

Adhering to the fine tradition of “walking with the motherland and benefiting the world through science and education”, the school has long focused on the spillover effects of superior disciplines and basic research, continuously expanded the forms and fields of social services, and actively contributed to the development of the country and local society. The construction of "One Road", domestic bridges and tunnels, railways and urban rail transit, water environment management, earthquake relief, Yangshan Deepwater Port, Shanghai World Expo, Chongming Eco-Island and other major strategic needs provide strong scientific and technological support. The school and the local government jointly promoted the construction of the "Knowledge Economic Circle around Tongji", and the output value has grown from less than 3 billion yuan in 2005 to 36.8 billion yuan in 2017, creating a model model of school-site cooperation of "three-region integration and joint development" .

The school actively expands international cooperation. On the basis of cooperation with Germany, it has developed into a cooperation with Europe as the center, expanding the layout of North America and radiating Asia and Africa. It has established China-Germany, China-France, China-Italy, China-Finland, 11 international cooperation platform colleges including the United Nations have signed cooperation agreements with more than 200 overseas universities and established research centers with many multinational companies such as Volkswagen, Siemens, Bayer and IBM. The school has initiated the establishment of the "China Green University Alliance" and the "International Green Campus Alliance" and served as the first chairman. "Continuing Campus Excellence Award" for colleges and universities.
