In the early days of the founding of New China, in order to meet the needs of the country's economic construction and build the new China's higher education system, the school adjusted a considerable number of advantageous majors and teaching equipment to support the development of domestic fraternal colleges and universities. In the mid-1950s, the school responded to the country's call for building a greater northwest, and experienced westward migration and division. It was divided into Shanghai Jiaotong University and Xi'an. In March 1959, the two parts were listed as national key universities at the same time.
