The school was founded in 1954. Since 2000, it was formed by the merger of Shanghai Light Industry College, Shanghai Metallurgical College, Shanghai Chemical Industry College, and Shanghai Fragrance Research Institute under the former Ministry of Light Industry. In 2016, it was renamed "Shanghai University of Applied Sciences" approved by the Ministry of Education.
