Baotou Vocational and Technical College is located in the hinterland of the Yellow Economic Belt and Baotou, the steel city of grassland. It is a full-time public higher vocational college with a 65-year history of running a school. It is a national exemplary higher vocational college and a national high-quality junior vocational college. . The school was founded in 1956, and its predecessor was Baotou Machinery Industry School, a national key technical secondary school. In the national "First Five-Year Plan" layout, the school, together with Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group, Northern Heavy Industry Group, and China Weaponry Fifty-two Research Institute, jointly established a well-known national weapons production, education and research integrated base. In 1998, the school was upgraded and established and became one of the first 14 higher vocational and technical colleges independently established in the country. In 1999, it was transferred to the former Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the People's Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In 2006, it was transferred to Baotou City People's Government. In 2009, Baotou Workers College was merged into the restructuring system, and the school-running pattern was basically stable.
The school occupies an area of 733,600 square meters, has a total fixed assets of 738 million yuan, and has 187 on-campus training bases. There are 11 teaching departments, 48 enrollment majors, and 10 professional groups, which are closely connected to the pillar industries and strategic emerging industries of the autonomous region and Baotou. There are now 9,505 full-time students, and the one-time employment rate in the past five years has exceeded 95%. There are 516 full-time teachers, including 26 famous teachers and rookies at the autonomous region level, 3 grassland talents in the autonomous region, 11 talents in Lucheng, 1 craftsman in Baotou, 26 model workers and May 1st labor medalists at the municipal level and 22 technical experts at the municipal level and above. The school adheres to the integration of production and education, school-enterprise cooperation, and establishes stable cooperative relations with more than 160 enterprises above designated size. 6 professional groups have established school-enterprise cooperation alliances, and 21 majors carry out modern apprenticeship and "1+X" certificate pilots. The 48 professional talent training programs are all jointly formulated by school-enterprise cooperation, and the proportion of practical teaching hours in the total class hours has reached 62.98%.
Over the past 65 years of running the school, it has trained and delivered nearly 70,000 talents to the society, especially in the equipment manufacturing industry, with a large number and outstanding performance. Taking the "Numerical Control Technology" major as an example, the school has trained technical experts, labor models, and craftsmen above the city level for more than 20 years.
