Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology is located in Baotou, one of the first batch of national civilized cities and the beautiful grassland steel city. The predecessor was Baotou Iron and Steel Industry School and Baotou Construction Engineering School founded in 1956. It was under the former Ministry of Metallurgical Industry. In 1958, the two schools merged to form Baotou. The Institute of Technology was renamed Baotou Institute of Iron and Steel in 1960. In 1998, it was placed under the management of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It was jointly established by the central and local governments. In 2000, the Inner Mongolia Coal Industry School was merged into the Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology in 2003.
