Tian Xuejun delivers video speech at the Hong Kong Patriotic Education Summit

On July 10, a summit was held in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to promote patriotic education in the region. Vice Minister of Education Tian Xuejun delivered a video speech.

Tian first reiterated the central government’s focus on patriotic education in the region and recognized the concerted and continuous efforts of the HKSAR government, various education institutions and social groups in Hong Kong in expanding and enriching patriotic education. He also said that stronger and more visible dissemination of patriotism as one of the core values was critical to the long-lasting stability and prosperity of Hong Kong and the steady and enduring development of the “one country, two systems” policy.

Tian then stressed the need to: 1) foster a comprehensive and correct understanding of the policy and forge a consensus that patriotism is the prerequisite for its effective implementation; 2) enhance education on China’s history and culture; 3) raise the awareness of building a community with a shared future for mankind; and 4) encourage people to combine their own dreams with the Chinese Dream, that is, to contribute to the rejuvenation of the country while pursuing personal greatness and happiness.

Tian hoped that patriotic education in Hong Kong could be further improved to cultivate generations of young people who are not only talented and intellectual, but also love, take pride in and have a sense of attachment to their own country. He said that the Ministry of Education would, as always, fully support the HKSAR in carrying out patriotic education, expand and deepen educational cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland, and help Hong Kong’s young people better achieve personal growth and success in the overall development of the country.

The summit was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, the Hong Kong Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group and the Bauhinia Magazine, with the support of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Education and the Education Bureau of the HKSAR government.
