On May 6, 2021, the national physical and aesthetic education promotion meeting was held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province to present experiences and practices in promoting sports and aesthetic education and map out the way forward.
The meeting underlined the role of physical and aesthetic education in producing patriotic, socially responsible, creative, and versatile future talent, and put forward five major tasks in this respect. First, awareness needed to be further raised about the value of physical and aesthetic education. Second, the existing institutions, assessment methods, dynamics among different subject areas, and safeguards in connection with physical and aesthetic education had to be reviewed to fill gaps and clear away hurdles obstructing further reforms. Third, the necessary infrastructure had to be put in place, to facilitate the reforming of teaching models, curricula and teaching materials, and assessment methods. Regional disparities in distribution of teaching resources should be especially addressed. Fourth, a multistakeholder partnership involving the school, students, parents and the community needed to be built to make the reforms a success. All stakeholders had to be incentivized to jointly build an enabling school, household and social environment conducive to the healthy development of students. Fifth, physical and aesthetic education had to be made an integral part of a comprehensive educational system in order to achieved the 2035 Education Modernization Goals.
At the meeting, representatives of provincial departments of education (Sichuan, Shanghai, Jilin and Shandong), Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Jiangsu Xishan High School and Hainan Qiongzhou High School made presentations.
