MOE holds conference to promote consolidation of anti-poverty achievements and effective transition to rural rejuvenation

On May 7, the MOE held a conference to push forward work on consolidating the results of poverty alleviation through education and facilitate a smooth transition to rural rejuvenation. The Vice Minister of Education, Sun Yao, attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

The meeting reviewed the remarkable results obtained by the education system in poverty relief over the past eight years, and underscored the importance of mobilizing more resources and intensifying efforts to reinvigorate rural areas. Four major tasks were identified: 1) designing policy measures that facilitated rural education and rural rejuvenation through education; 2) continuing the implementation of poverty relief policies, maintaining support to poor counties and enhancing the long-term mechanism of ensuring the full coverage of compulsory education; 3) encouraging relevant HEIs to innovate, expand and enrich their target support to designated poor areas; 4) mobilizing more teachers and students to work in rural areas, as an opportunity for them to gain hands-on experience while contributing to rural rejuvenation.

The meeting was held online. Representatives from the Department of Education of Fujian and Guizhou provinces, Tsinghua University, Jilin University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and the MOE’s Department of Finance and Department of Vocational and Technical Education delivered speeches. Participants included representatives from the Department of Education (Education Commission) in all provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities), Education Bureau of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, universities directly under the MOE, universities jointly established by the MOE and provinces and Northwest Normal University, as well as the MOE’s relevant departments and bureaus.
