On the morning of April 15, 2021, an inauguration ceremony for National Security Education Day 2021 was held at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). Minister of Education Chen Baosheng delivered a video message.
Chen pointed out that national security is fundamental to the stability of the state and the welfare of the Chinese people. The Hong Kong National Security Law introduced in June 2020 has effectively safeguarded China’s sovereignty, security and development interests, maintained the Hong Kong SAR’s prosperity and stability, and protected the legitimate rights and interests of Hong Kong residents. He hailed it as a major milestone in the implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems”.
The minister said that Articles 9 and 10 of the Hong Kong National Security Law specifically states that the SAR shall strengthen communication, guidance, supervision and management of matters involving national security in schools, and shall carry out national security education through schools. In order to better support the SAR government in further promoting national security education for young people, the Ministry of Education will distribute reading materials about the law to Hong Kong schools and teachers. He encouraged Hong Kong youth to be responsible, law-abiding and patriotic citizens, support the rule of law in Hong Kong, and learn more about the nation’s history and development path.
