MOE holds virtual meeting to promote physical and aesthetic education

On December 7, the MOE held an online meeting to boost the implementation of two documents on physical and aesthetic education: the Opinions on Enhancing and Improving Physical Education in Schools in the New Era and the Opinions on Enhancing and Improving Aesthetic Education in Schools in the New Era. Vice Education Minister Zhong Denghua attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

The meeting highlighted the significance of improving physical and arts education in the development of well-rounded education, and cultivation of patriotism, social responsibility, creativity and practical skills.

It identified four tasks in pushing forward school reforms in physical and arts education. More specifically, schools need to: a) encourage innovative teaching methods and facilitate various competitions to increase students’ knowledge and practical capabilities in these two areas; b) increase financial investment in improving teaching workforce, teaching venues, and equipment and facilities; c) improve evaluation systems; and d) enhance coordination between school education, family education and after school tutoring services.

Finally, it called for innovations, sound planning, policy support, leadership by examples, and provision of incentives to ensure successful reforms in the two types of education.

Representatives from educational authorities of Shanghai, and Liaoning, Shandong, Sichuan, Yunnan and Gansu provinces, as well as South China University of Technology and Soochow University attended the meeting and delivered speeches. Members of the secretary group of the Central Education Work Leading Group and the heads of MOE’s relevant departments attended the meeting at the main venue. Relevant leaders from the Education Departments (Education Commissions) of all provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, the Education Bureau of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, universities directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education and those jointly established by the MOE and provinces attended the meeting at sub-venues.
