MOE hosts National Conference on Moral Education for Primary and Secondary School Students

On December 2, the Ministry of Education hosted the National Conference on Moral Education for Primary and Secondary School Students in Shanghai. Vice Minister of Education Zheng Fuzhi and Vice Mayor of Shanghai Chen Qun attended the event. Attendees also include representatives and experts from the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Central Committee of the Communist Young League, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, National Health Commission, and local-level education authorities.

In his speech, Zheng said recent years had seen remarkable progress in moral education for Chinese primary and secondary school students. He stressed that work was yet to be done to make moral education more targeted and effective to meet new demands and tackle new challenges. He suggested the following five measures: 1) Better incorporating case studies, discussion, real-life experiences into academic study at schools; 2) Increasing complementarity between moral education and classes of other academic disciplines; 3) Creating a more positive and healthy school and social ambience for children, including better preventing bullying at school and building a safer internet environment; 4) Enhancing school-family collaboration, including strengthening the role of parent committees, improving the parent-teacher home visit mechanism, and sharing successful stories of parental participation in school education; 5) Stepping up cooperation between education authorities and other relevant authorities.

The conference released a Guide to Mental Health Education, a Guide to Family Education and successful stories of the implementation of the previously published Guide to Moral Education for Primary and Secondary Schools.

Representatives from different cities and provinces across China shared their experience on various topics in panel discussions. After the conference, they visited several primary and secondary schools in Shanghai.
