MOE debates future role of AI in teacher capacity building

The MOE held a meeting under the theme “Use of AI for teacher capacity development and building a stronger rural teacher workforce” in Shizuishan City, Ningxia Autonomous Region on November 20-21. Sun Yao, a member of the Leading Party Group for the Ministry of Education and vice education minister, attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

The meeting first reviewed the experiences and achievements in using AI for teacher capacity building, especially that of the rural teacher workforce, over the past years. It examined the latest developments in the education sector, and presented plans for using AI as a potential solution to address emerging challenges. The meeting encouraged exploring new approaches to teacher capacity building as part of the effort to create a quality education system.

Local educational departments were urged to align all efforts with the Party’s guidelines for education for the new era. AI and related technological solutions were strongly advocated for addressing understaffing problems, and inadequacies and imbalances in the distribution of teacher workforce, and for improving the effectiveness of poverty alleviation through education. The meeting also called for targeted supply side reforms by improving the social and economic status of teachers, to ensure outstanding rural teachers “are recruited and retained, and realize their worth”.

Officials from provincial education administrations, heads of departments under the MOE, experts from the MOE’s Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence for Teacher Workforce Development, and representatives from pilot universities for the Artificial Intelligence for Teacher Workforce Development initiative in Ningxia attended the meeting.
