Tian Xuejun delivers virtual speech for unveiling of world heritage site certificate in Yancheng

On July 5, 2020, the ceremony for unveiling the world heritage certificate of the Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China (Phase I) was held in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. Vice Minister of Education Tian Xuejun who is also the Chair of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO and Chair of the 44th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, and Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre Mechtild Rössler, both delivered speeches via video.

Tian noted that the Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf provided rich food resources for millions of migratory birds, depicting the harmony between man and nature and serving as an example of balance between economic development and ecological protection. He also said that the application for this site’s inclusion into the World Heritage List demonstrated China’s determination in pursuing ecological progress and green development, and that the decision of including it into the List by the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee on July 5, 2019 in turn represented the Committee’s recognition of China’s progress in achieving that goal. He added that this site in Yancheng was the first coastal wetland in China to be granted world heritage status, which was significant for heritage protection in the country and even the whole world.

Tian finally expressed the hope that the Yancheng government would continue to protect this important natural heritage well by exploring better practices through international cooperation, thus contributing to ecological progress and the development of a community of common destiny for all mankind.
