MOE scales up joint meeting mechanism for the prevention of child and adolescent myopia

The MOE has invited six government departments to participate in a joint meeting mechanism for the prevention and treatment of child and adolescent myopia, as part of the effort to implement instructions issued by President Xi Jinping on reducing short-sightedness among primary and secondary school students, and the requirements of the Comprehensive Program for the Prevention and Control of Short-sightedness of Children and Adolescents jointly issued by the Ministry of Education and seven other departments. All six departments – the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Health Security Administration, Central Committee of the Communist Young League, All-China Women"s Federation, Ministry of Civil Affairs, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences - have agreed to join the mechanism, taking the total number of participants to 15.

The Joint Meeting Mechanism spearheads work on the prevention and treatment of child and adolescent myopia across the country, including deliberations and taking decisions on comprehensive guidelines, overall coordination and management, and major policy interventions, supervision and inspection, in accordance with its responsibilities and rules of procedure. The MOE serves as the convenor of the Joint Meetings, while the National Health Commission holds the role of deputy convenor. The office of the Joint Meetings is located at the Department of Physical, Health and Arts Education under the MOE.
