Shougang Institute of Technology was established in 1978, formerly known as the Beijing Iron and Steel Institute Branch. In 1994, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to establish Shougang Institute of Technology. Since its establishment, it has trained more than 19,000 full-time undergraduate and junior college graduates for Shougang and the society. "School-enterprise cooperation, work-study integration" is a distinctive feature of the college's talent training. In Beijing, the capital city where various colleges and universities gather, the employment rate of college graduates has reached more than 99% for several consecutive years. In January 2014, Shougang Institute of Technology was appraised as an "Advanced Unit for Continuing Education Management" by the Organization Department of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Human Resources and Social Security. In 2015, Shougang Institute of Technology was awarded the honorary title of "Capital Civilized Unit" in 2012-2014. In 2016, the "Beijing Institute of Work Safety Management" was listed in Shougang Institute of Technology. In 2016, the "Beijing Professional Continuing Education Base Project" passed the review and acceptance.
The college is located on the northwest side of Jinyuan Bridge on the Fifth Ring Road in West Beijing, adjacent to the Shougang Sports Building. It covers an area of 167,000 square meters with a construction area of 108,000 square meters. There are training centers, student computer rooms, professional classrooms, laboratories, network centers and other modern teaching facilities. The total bandwidth of the campus network outlet is 200Mbps, the digital resources are 27TB, the library has 350,000 books; student apartments, restaurants, 400-meter standard sports fields , A variety of ball sports venues and student activity centers and other school-running supporting facilities are complete.
The college now has seven secondary colleges, including the School of Management, the School of Computer and Media Arts, the School of Nursing and Preschool Education, the School of Metallurgical Safety and Environmental Protection, the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the School of Basic and the School of Continuing Education. There are 31 higher vocational majors including information technology, safety and environmental protection, economic management, intelligent manufacturing, social sports, pre-school education, and nursing; 12 adult college degree education majors including organic-electric integration technology, human resource management, and computer application technology. Each year, it is enrolled in a unified way for the society, and the enrollment forms include unified enrollment, independent enrollment, single examination and single enrollment, and adult examination enrollment. At present, there are 2,372 full-time vocational students and 1,200 students in adult college degree education. Each year, more than 10,000 people at all levels and types of personnel are trained for enterprises.
From 2014 to 2018, the college won 6 comprehensive teaching achievement awards from higher education institutions in Beijing, 3 higher education research achievement awards from the China Metallurgical Education Society, 3 research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 5 China Iron and Steel Association micro-class competition awards , 1 Beijing-level fine course, 5 Beijing fine textbooks. Won 15 prizes in the Beijing Teachers Informatization Teaching Competition. In the National Vocational College Student Skills Competition and College Student Mathematical Modeling competitions, the college won 8 national first prizes, 20 national second prizes, and 10 Beijing first prizes. Two teachers of the college won the honorary title of "Beijing University Teaching Teacher", and four of them won the honorary title of "Beijing Labor Model".
In recent years, the college has taken the initiative to adapt to changes in the capital's industrial structure adjustments and changes in the demand for high-precision technical talents, and has undergone professional transformation. Focusing on the shortage of senior nursing and pre-school education talents in Beijing, provide nursing and pre-school education majors; serve the development of the Beijing Winter Olympics and ice and snow sports, and open social sports (ice and snow sports) majors; adapt to the construction of a livable city in the capital and the development of Shougang industry. The mechanical and electrical majors successfully transformed the city’s comprehensive service majors; it is in line with the digital entertainment industry of Shijingshan Park in Zhongguancun, focusing on the development of digital media majors featuring virtual reality and digital media industries; focusing on the safety of the capital, we will make every effort to build a safety production training base in Beijing. New professional groups such as urban safety production, health and nursing, social sports, digital media technology, intelligent manufacturing, and preschool education have been established, with service majors accounting for more than 80%.
