Communication University of China is a "first-class discipline construction university" directly under the Ministry of Education, a key construction university of the "211 Project", and a key construction university of the "985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform". In April 1959, with the approval of the State Council, the school was upgraded to Beijing Broadcasting Institute. In August 2004, Beijing Broadcasting Institute was renamed Communication University of China. The school is located on the bank of the ancient canal in the east of Beijing, China. The campus covers an area of 463,700 square meters with a total construction area of 638,800 square meters.

The school has established exchanges and cooperation with more than 200 well-known foreign universities, scientific research and media institutions. In 2009, the school initiated the establishment of the "International Union of Media Higher Education", and 65 well-known media colleges and universities from 27 countries and regions joined the "Alliance". The school is also a UNESCO chair unit of "Media and Women", and has established international academic research institutions such as the Asian Media Research Center and the European Media Research Center.
