Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication

Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication is affiliated to Beijing, and is a full-time general higher education institution jointly established by the National Press and Publication Administration and the Beijing Municipal People's Government. The school’s predecessor was the Printing Technology Department of the Cultural College established by the Ministry of Culture in 1958. In 1961, the Cultural Institute was abolished, and the Department of Printing Technology was merged into the Central Academy of Art and Design (now Tsinghua University Academy of Fine Arts). In 1978, with the approval of the State Council, the Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication was established on the basis of the Department of Printing Technology. After nearly 60 years of development and construction, the school has become a media university with distinctive disciplines, strong faculty, scientific research innovation, and an open school structure.


The school adheres to characteristic development and enhances core competitiveness with characteristic discipline construction. The school has initially formed four characteristic disciplines of media technology, media culture, media art, and media management. It has built a new digital media professional group composed of digital printing, digital publishing, digital media art, and digital media technology with the characteristics of the times. 4 key construction disciplines in Beijing, 10 first-level discipline master degree authorization points, 5 professional master degree authorization points, 19 second-level discipline master degree authorization points, and 30 undergraduate majors. The school and the Communication University of China, Beijing Jiaotong University, the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, South China University of Technology, Tianjin University of Science and Technology and other universities and scientific research institutions jointly cultivate doctoral students. The school has 2 national-level specialty construction sites, 1 national-level excellent teaching team, 1 national-level teaching achievement award, 1 national-level experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national-level off-campus practical education base for university students, and 2 national-level Excellent engineer education and training program, 1 national quality textbook, 6 national "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" textbooks, 1 Beijing first-class major, 4 Beijing characteristic professional construction sites, 3 Beijing experimental teaching demonstration centers , 3 Beijing off-campus talent training bases, 2 Beijing demonstration campus innovation practice bases. The school is the vice chairman unit of the Printing and Packaging Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, the executive vice chairman unit of the publishing professional teaching steering committee of higher education institutions and the secretariat affiliated unit, the member unit of the National Publishing Professional Degree Postgraduate Education Steering Committee, the National Press and Publication Administration, and Beijing Publishing and printing senior talent training base, Beijing Publishing Industry and Culture Research Base, Beijing Cultural Security Research Base, National New Media Industry Base "Animation Creation and Talent Training Center".


The school adheres to the people-oriented approach and implements the strategy of strengthening the school with talents. At the end of 2017, the school had a total of 801 faculty members, including 538 full-time teachers. The proportion of masters and doctors reached 89.78%, and the proportion of teachers with senior professional titles reached 50.93%. The school has formed a team of industry-leading talents with the core of the leading talents in the press and publishing industry, the winners of the Chinese Publishing Government Award and the Bi Sheng Printing Outstanding Achievement Award, and the teaching and research centered on the national outstanding teachers and the high-level talents of the Beijing Talent Education Program Team. A talent team with continuously optimized structure of academic qualifications, age and professional titles has been built. Approved as a post-doctoral research station in 2013. As of November 2017, a total of 44 post-doctoral fellows were recruited, of which 7 were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Foundation, and 6 were funded by the Beijing Natural Science Foundation and the Social Science Foundation; 1 received special funding from the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, 7 received general funding from the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation (including 2 first-class funding; 5 second-class funding), 24 received funding from Beijing Postdoctoral Research Projects, and 4 received Beijing The Municipal Education Commission funded scientific research projects. Among the city-affiliated units, our school ranks third in the total number of post-doctoral research projects funded by post-doctoral research activities in Beijing, and the proportion of the number of funded persons to the number of post-doctoral students in the station ranks first.


In the past 60 years of running the school, the school has trained more than 50,000 graduates for the society, and has been widely recognized by the society.


The school vigorously promotes scientific research and implements scientific and technological innovation-driven projects. In the past five years, the school's research funding has stabilized at around 60 million yuan. In the past five years, the school has won 46 national-level projects, including 26 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 16 National Social Science Foundation projects, 2 soft science projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 science and technology support project, and 1 national key research and development plan; There are 123 ministerial-level projects, including 19 projects from the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, 9 projects from the Beijing Municipal Natural Science Foundation, 39 projects from the Beijing Social Science Fund, 7 projects from the Ministry of Education in the humanities and social sciences, and 8 key projects from the Beijing Municipal Education Commission. There are 15 projects of the Press and Publication Administration, 26 other projects; 284 municipal-level projects, and 408 various horizontal scientific research projects.


The school strengthened the integration of production, education and research, and established a scientific research platform covering the press and publishing industry chain. In 2010, approved by Beijing, the school established Beijing Green Printing and Packaging Industry Technology Research Institute and Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication University Science and Technology Park. In 2013, the school established the Cultural Industry Safety Research Institute and Qingdao Research Institute. In 2014, the school was approved as the National Collaborative Innovation Base for Green Printing and Packaging Industry and established the Digital Publishing and Media Research Institute of Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication. In 2015, the Copyright Research Center of the China Copyright Association, the National Composite Digital Publishing Project and the Copyright Protection Project settled in Northern India. In October 2016, Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication, Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology and Beijing Jianzhu University initiated the establishment of "Jingnan University Alliance". The school has signed strategic cooperation agreements with local governments, more than 20 scientific research institutions and enterprises, and sister universities, respectively, and initiated the establishment of the Beijing Green Printing Industry Technology Innovation Alliance. In the past five years, it has undertaken nearly 200 major national, provincial and ministerial scientific and technological projects. The number and quality of scientific research results of the school have been significantly improved. More than 2,000 papers have been published, including more than 1,200 retrieved papers such as SCI, EI, ISTP, and CSSCI; published works, More than 400 teaching materials; more than 500 authorized patents; 5 scientific research awards at the national level and 4 at the provincial and ministerial level.


The school insists on opening schools and vigorously strengthens foreign exchanges and cooperation. It has established inter-university cooperation and exchange relationships with more than 50 famous universities and scientific research institutions in 14 countries including the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Germany, and signed agreements for undergraduate, postgraduate and joint undergraduate and postgraduate training and joint degree awarding. Teaching, research, and practice bases have been established in more than 100 publishing houses, companies, enterprises and institutions at home and abroad, and many companies have set up scholarships and grants in our school. The school has established an alumni association and actively utilizes alumni resources to provide services for the further development of the school.
