Beijing Language and Culture University is an institution of higher learning directly under the Ministry of Education of China. It was established in 1962 under the personal care of Premier Zhou Enlai. It was named Beijing Language Institute in June 1964. In 1974, Chairman Mao Zedong wrote the name of the school. In June 1996, it was renamed Beijing Language and Culture University. In 2002, the name was simplified to Beijing Language and Culture University.


   Beijing Language and Culture University is the only international university in China whose main task is to educate international students in Chinese and Chinese culture. It is known as the "Little United Nations". The school provides professional education for Chinese students in foreign languages, Chinese, information science, economics, and art, and at the same time undertakes tasks such as cultivating Chinese language teachers and preparing foreign language training for students studying abroad. After more than 50 years of development, Beiyu has developed into a multidisciplinary university with its characteristics and advantages in language teaching and research, and the coordinated development of Chinese, foreign languages and related disciplines.    Beijing Language and Culture University has the longest history, the largest scale, and the strongest teachers in international Chinese language education and Chinese culture education. So far, the school has trained nearly 200,000 foreign students who understand Chinese and are familiar with Chinese culture for 183 countries and regions in the world. Many of these alumni have become well-known figures in academia, politics, and business. Former United Nations Deputy Secretary-General and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, Kasem Tokayev, Ethiopian President Murat Teshomei Votu, and Chairman of the National Security Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan Karim Masimov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov, German Sinologist Gu Bin, American physicist, Nobel Prize winner Eric Cornell and other celebrities have all studied in Northern Language. In addition, Beiyu has also trained hundreds of thousands of outstanding talents for China, including a large number of publicly sent overseas students who have received special foreign language training in the Training Department for Overseas Students. Now they have become the pillars of the country in various fields.


Since the 1990s, on the one hand, Bilingual has maintained its characteristics and advantages in the field of Chinese international education. On the other hand, it has actively developed related disciplines, covering literature, economics, law, engineering, history, education, management, and There are 8 disciplines including art, 1 post-doctoral mobile station, 2 first-level discipline points for doctoral degree authorization, 17 second-level discipline points for doctoral degree authorization; 6 first-level discipline points for master's degree authorization, and professional master degree authorization points 6 pcs. Among them, there are 1 national key discipline and 10 Beijing key disciplines.

The school currently has 13 research centers (or bases) at or above the provincial and ministerial level. Among them, the Research Center for Chinese as a Second Language is one of the 100 key research bases of the Ministry of Education for Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Arab Studies Center is the key cultivation base for national and regional research of the Ministry of Education. The National Language Resources Monitoring and Research Center for Print Media is an important base for the National Language Commission’s language resource monitoring. The China Language and Character Standards Research Center is the position where the National Language Commission develops and revises the language standards and standards. The China Language Resources Protection and Research Center is the state The Language Commission is a professional institution that implements the National Project for the Protection of Language Resources. The International Chinese Language Teaching and Research Base is one of the first ten research bases for the international promotion of Chinese language established by Hanban. The Research Center for Translation and Communication of Chinese Culture to Foreigners is a Chinese and foreign research base invested by the Ministry of Culture. The cultural mutual translation cooperation platform, the Capital International Cultural Research Base and the Beijing Literature Language and Cultural Inheritance Research Base are the key research bases of Beijing’s philosophy and social sciences. The only language center in the “Innovation Center”, the China National Language Application Research Center is a national language application research institution supported by the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, and the International Education and Cultural Dissemination Base of Chinese Medicine is a characteristic base established by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. , Guangming Literary Heritage Research Institute is a research institution jointly established with Guangming Daily. In addition to provincial and ministerial-level scientific research centers (or bases), our school also has 33 school-level research institutions, such as the "Confucius Institute Sustainable Development Collaborative Innovation Center" and "China Peripheral Language and Culture Collaborative Innovation Center".


  International Northern Language


   With the continuous expansion of my country’s foreign exchanges and cooperation, the school’s connection with the world has become increasingly extensive and close. At present, it has established cooperative and exchange relations with 321 universities and educational institutions in 58 countries and regions in the world, forming a comprehensive, multi-field, in-depth and fruitful international education pattern. The school cooperated with Harvard University to establish Harvard Beijing Academy. Established Bangkok College in Thailand and Tokyo branch in Japan. The school adopts various forms to carry out Sino-foreign joint education, with more than ten foreign universities such as Webster University in the United States, George Mason University in the United States, Konstanz University of Applied Sciences in Germany, and the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom to carry out joint training of undergraduate or graduate students. It has hosted 18 Confucius Institutes and 1 Confucius Classroom, and was rated as "Advanced Chinese Cooperative College." In recent years, an average of about 100 teachers teach overseas each year, more than 400 students go abroad for exchange and study, and more than 1,500 foreign guests are received each year.
