Hangzhou Normal University is a local comprehensive university with a focus on teacher education, art education, and basic disciplines in the arts and sciences, with rapid development of emerging applied disciplines and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. The predecessor of the school can be traced back to the Zhejiang government two-level normal school founded in 1908. It is one of the six earliest higher normal schools established in the country. In 1978, Hangzhou Normal University was established with the approval of the State Council. Around 2000, Hangzhou College of Education and Hangzhou Medical College were merged into one after another. In 2007, the school was renamed Hangzhou Normal University.

Co-founded a Confucius Institute with Middle Tennessee State University in the United States.
