Wenzhou-Kean University is a Sino-US cooperative university with independent legal personality. On November 16, 2011, the Ministry of Education approved the cooperation between Wenzhou University and Kean University to prepare for the establishment of Wenzhou-Kean University. On March 31, 2014, the Ministry of Education formally approved the establishment of Wenzhou-Kean University. In July, as the only education project in Zhejiang Province, it was included in the fifth round of China-US high-level humanities exchange consultation results.
The establishment of Wenzhou-Kean University has received cordial attention from the central leadership and great attention from party committees and governments at all levels. On May 8, 2006, Comrade Xi Jinping personally attended the signing ceremony for co-founding Wenzhou-Kean University at Kean University in the United States and delivered an important speech. As a cooperative project between Zhejiang Province and New Jersey, the Ministry of Education has listed the establishment of Wenzhou-Kean University as one of the major Sino-foreign cooperative education projects to expand education opening and promote reform through opening up. On September 23, 2015, President Xi Jinping affirmed that Wenzhou-Kean University "is currently functioning well" at the 3rd China-US Provincial Governors Forum.
Wenzhou-Kean University is committed to "finding different development directions for different students", introduces and draws on the resources, concepts and models of high-quality universities in the United States, closely integrates China's national conditions and the development needs of regional economics and culture, and builds a student-oriented, An international university with a world-class education level featuring innovation, tolerance, diversified development, and distinctive characteristics. The goal of the school's talent training is to integrate Chinese and American international education and teaching methods, and cultivate international talents with a global perspective, familiar with international rules and affairs, and the ability to innovate, create, and develop. On the development path, starting from a teaching university, with the development of high-level international cooperative research as a breakthrough, it will develop with equal emphasis on teaching and scientific research, and gradually develop into a research and teaching university with world-class education. In terms of value orientation, adhere to the principle of public welfare of Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools, and implement non-profit running schools. Both China and the United States will not obtain profits from it.
The scale of the school is 5,000 full-time students in the recent period and 8,500 full-time students in the mid-term. The school-running level is mainly based on undergraduate education, with moderate development of postgraduate education, focusing on the development of economics and management, technology and mathematics, art design, education and psychology, health and rehabilitation sciences and other professional groups. At present, the school enrollment situation is good, and the quality of students is high. This year, the first batch of undergraduate liberal arts and science students across the country averaged more than 20 or 30 points above the provincial first line. The province’s new college entrance examination enrolled a total of 385 people, all of whom were fully enrolled and the students exceeded the undergraduate line by about 100 points on average. There are currently about 2,000 students in the school, including 15 international students, overseas Chinese students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, and American exchange students. There are about 100 full-time foreign teachers recruited globally by Kean University in the United States, offering a total of 11 majors including accounting, finance, English, computer science and technology, international business, marketing, visual communication design, and management science. Implementation of all-English, small-class teaching, more than 90% of the courses are imported from Kean University, using American original textbooks, and more than 90% of teachers are selected by Kean University and recruited globally. After graduating, he was awarded a dual degree from the University of Kean, Wenzhou-Kean University, and a diploma from Wenzhou-Kean University, and initially established an American education model in line with China's national conditions. At present, the school has two graduates of about 400 people, and the initial employment rate is about 95%.
The school is located in Li'ao Street, Ouhai District, Wenzhou City, a famous hometown of overseas Chinese with beautiful scenery. The planned campus area is 3,000 mu, including 1059.4 mu for the first phase of construction, with a construction area of 322,700 square meters. The Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government allocated 1.5 billion yuan in the first phase of special funds for the pre-construction of the campus, and implemented international bidding. The campus architecture embodies the design concept of "Chinese-style layout, Western-style architecture", and strives to create a cultural integration between China and the United States, teachers and students learn from each other, and students are independent A growing humanities campus to create an ecological, intelligent, and open campus. At present, the 100,000 square meters of the first and second bid sections of the first phase of the campus have been completed and put into use. A modern and beautiful campus has begun to take shape, and the rest of the projects are under construction.
In order to accelerate the integration of China and the United States and accumulate experience in running schools, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, since 2012, it has enrolled students in the form of Sino-US Cooperative Kenn Projects. A total of 204 students were enrolled in the three majors of Economics, English, and Computer. In April 2013, the Ministry of Education newly approved the addition of international economics and trade projects, 4 majors enrolled 240 students, and all majors were admitted in the first batch of college entrance examination. The United States is responsible for the teaching and academic affairs of the Sino-US Cooperative Kenn Program. The program courses are imported from the United States. Full-time teachers are selected by the United States. The original American textbooks are used to implement small-class teaching in English. The cooperative project is progressing smoothly and has achieved remarkable results. It has been fully affirmed by the education administration department and all sectors of society. In November 2013, it successfully passed the relevant assessment of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. After the school was formally established in March 2014, the school enrolled students independently.
Wenzhou-Kean University will fully absorb the advanced faculty construction concepts and management models of American universities, establish a strict teacher appointment system, and attract and select global talents in accordance with the standards of world-class universities. At the same time, establish a scientific and reasonable teacher and scientific research evaluation system, support the professional development of teachers, establish a people-oriented human resource management system, and provide strong talent support for the school's internationalization. The school currently has about 250 Chinese and foreign faculty members, of which 100 are full-time foreign teachers, most of whom have an international teaching background and doctorate degrees.
Wenzhou-Kean University will actively explore a modern university system featuring Sino-foreign cooperation, and form a modern university system featuring social participation, self-sponsored education in accordance with the law, and scientific management. The board of directors is the highest decision-making body of the school and is composed of both China and the United States. The school adheres to the principal responsibility system under the leadership of the board of directors, adheres to academic autonomy, professors govern the school, and gradually establishes a streamlined, flat, and efficient internal organization and management structure, as well as an academic institution full of innovation and entrepreneurship.
