Zhejiang Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydropower is an applied undergraduate university with distinctive characteristics. The school was born, prospered by water, and named for water. Its predecessor can be traced back to the Hangzhou Hydropower School in 1953, the Hangzhou Water Conservancy School in 1956 and the Zhejiang Electric Power Technical School in 1958. Zhejiang Water Conservancy and Hydropower School, Zhejiang Water Conservancy and Hydropower Technical School, Zhejiang Water Conservancy and Hydropower Institute and other development stages. In the 67 years since the school was founded, the school has changed its name and location several times. The people of Zhejiang Province have never forgotten the original intention of water conservancy to serve the country. In 2004, the then Secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee Xi Jinping put forward the instructions and expectations of "Building a high-quality and distinctive water conservancy and hydropower school" to our school in a congratulatory letter, which pointed out the direction for the school's development. In 2013, the school was renamed Zhejiang Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydropower. In 2014, it was jointly established by the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government and the Ministry of Water Resources. In 2017, it was approved as a bachelor degree-granting unit. In 2019, it was listed as a pilot demonstration college for applied construction in Zhejiang Province. The Ministry of Water Resources strongly supervises the personnel training base unit (only 3 universities in the country), and has won the title of "National Civilized Campus", becoming the only university in the province that is both a national civilized unit and a national civilized campus. The school’s various undertakings have entered a period of vigorous development.



The school is located in Hangzhou, a famous historical and cultural city and a world scenic spot. It covers an area of 820,600 square meters with a total school building area of 288,300 square meters. The campus environment is fresh and elegant, which is an ideal place for seeking knowledge and learning. The school currently has nearly 11,000 full-time students, of which more than 8,600 are undergraduates; there are more than 750 faculty members and more than 490 full-time teachers, of which 45% are teachers with senior titles and 86% are teachers with master's degree or above. They have shared academicians and national elites. The school fully implements the fundamental task of Lide’s cultivation of people, adheres to the application-oriented orientation of running a school, upholds the talent training concept of "combining theory and practice, and cultivating people through practice". It mainly promotes the SWH-CDIO-E engineering education model, and strives to cultivate an international perspective and family-national feelings. Industry backbones and leading talents with water conservancy spirit and practical ability have initially formed a discipline and professional system with engineering as the main body, water conservancy and hydropower as the characteristics, and multi-disciplinary coordinated development. There are now 11 secondary colleges, 2 teaching departments and 2 research institutions. There are 35 undergraduate and junior college majors in 5 university disciplines including engineering, science, management, economics and literature, including 29 undergraduate majors. It has 6 first-class discipline construction projects in Zhejiang Province, 1 national-level first-class professional construction site, 9 provincial-level first-class professional construction sites, 1 provincial superior professional construction project, 7 provincial characteristic majors, and provincial and ministerial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers 3, as the first completion unit, won 1 National Teaching Achievement Second Prize, 5 Zhejiang Teaching Achievement First Prizes, and 9 Second Prizes.



The school focuses on scientific and technological innovation and services, focusing on the construction of water conservancy and hydropower characteristic disciplines, meeting major needs in water conservancy and environmental ecology, and actively building high-end academic platforms and high-level research teams. Since the upgrade, 22 national projects have been approved, more than 100 provincial and ministerial projects; 3 second prizes, 1 third prize of provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, 15 Zhejiang water conservancy science and technology innovation awards, and Zhejiang social science and technology awards There are 2 outstanding scientific research awards; nearly 380 papers in the four major index journals and first-level journals have been published; more than 1,500 intellectual property rights have been authorized; more than 850 horizontal service projects have been undertaken, and the contractual amount has reached nearly 150 million yuan. There is a national vocational skill appraisal institute, which is a designated training institution for the water conservancy industry; the first river (lake) long college in the country has been established, which is an important base for serving the national water control work; since 2019, the provincial key laboratories, engineering research centers, Four provincial-level scientific research platforms, including the new university think tank, have achieved breakthroughs from 0 to 4.



The school is committed to the inheritance and innovation of water culture. It takes the excavation, research and inheritance of water culture as its own responsibility, and is committed to creating a new era of water conservancy spirit and the education and communication highland of Zhejiang water culture. The school is a national civilized unit. It has important platforms such as the National Hydrological Education Base, Zhejiang Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance Teaching Base (Water Culture), Zhejiang Water Culture Research and Education Center, and Zhejiang New University Think Tanks. The three major projects of cultural dissemination and water culture research have built a system of educating people with water and cultural people's characteristics. It is one of the earliest universities in the country to systematically carry out water culture education. In recent years, it has undertaken more than 40 projects of various types, published more than 10 water culture books, and won more than 10 awards, making contributions to the development of Zhejiang water conservancy and the construction of a cultural province.



The school deepens international cooperation and exchanges and actively participates in the construction of the "Belt and Road". Cooperate with the United Nations International Small Hydropower Center and other institutions to contribute to China's water governance wisdom and water governance plans through various forms of exchanges; and with well-known universities in more than 10 countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Belarus, Malaysia, and Ukraine Establish cooperative relations, explore teachers' academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation, and Sino-foreign cooperation in running schools, and strive to broaden the international vision of teachers and students. Actively introduce high-quality foreign resources, and cooperate with the Belarusian National Technical University to organize an undergraduate education project in the field of machine design and manufacturing and its automation, which was approved by the Ministry of Education. Joint laboratories and R&D centers have been built with famous foreign universities, and the Zhejiang-Belarus Water Conservancy and Hydropower Safety Monitoring Intelligent Equipment and System Joint Laboratory has been approved as a key laboratory of Zhejiang Province. In cooperation with the Belarusian National Technical University, the "Zheshui Institute-Belarusian National Technical University Surface Engineering R&D Center" was jointly established to help enterprises overcome technical problems. Establish joint undergraduate and master training programs with the University of Exeter, the University of California, Riverside, the University of Southern Queensland, Australia, and the University of Zaragoza, Spain. Actively promote overseas education and prepare for the establishment of the "Dayu Silk Road Academy" in Malaysia.



The school always puts the quality of education in a prominent position, and the cultivation of applied talents bears fruit. Students have won a large number of national and provincial awards in various disciplines and sports competitions, ranking among the best in similar institutions. The initial employment rate of graduates has been stable at over 95% for a long time, and it has been widely recognized and widely praised by the society for its "quick start and strong stamina". A large number of industry leaders have emerged from the previous alumni, many of whom have become leaders and backbones of water conservancy system management departments or enterprises. The Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security respectively awarded our school the titles of "National Water Conservancy Industry Skilled Talent Cultivation Outstanding Contribution Award" and "National Skilled Talent Cultivation Outstanding Contribution Award". The school is known as the cradle of Zhejiang water conservancy and hydropower talent training.
