The predecessor of Yunnan Energy Vocational and Technical College was Yunnan Coal Industry School. It was established in 1978 with the approval of the then Yunnan Provincial Revolutionary Committee. It was officially enrolled in the autumn of 1980. In 1998, it was rated as a "provincial and ministerial-level key technical secondary school". In 2000 It was renamed "Yunnan Engineering and Technology School" with the approval of the Provincial Department of Education. In October 2002, the "Yunnan Energy Vocational and Technical College" was established with the approval of the Provincial People's Government. In the autumn of 2003, it began to recruit three-year and five-year colleges. In November 2015, it was rated as “good” in the “Evaluation of the Work Level of Talent Cultivation in Higher Vocational and Technical Colleges” organized by the Provincial Department of Education.
The college is under the leadership and management of Yunnan Provincial Department of Education, Yunnan Provincial Coal Industry Bureau, Yunnan Coal Mine Safety Supervision Bureau and Yunnan Provincial Department of Finance. The college is located in Qujing City, the main coal producing area in Yunnan Province. It covers an area of 150 acres, with a construction area of 53790 square meters, 2 teaching buildings, a total of 90 classrooms; 1 laboratory building, 1 internship factory, and 45 professional experimental training rooms. Among them, the experimental training rooms for coal mining, ventilation safety, digital measurement, PLC, etc. are at the advanced level or unique in the province.
The college adheres to the direction of "based on coal, oriented to energy, and serving the society", focusing on the organization of higher vocational and technical education, while carrying out secondary vocational education, adult higher education, job training and vocational skills appraisal. In the past 30 years of running the school, it has opened coal mining technology, mine ventilation and safety, mine geology, engineering measurement technology, mechatronics technology, power plants and power systems, power equipment and management of hydropower stations, computer application technology, accounting, secretarial, advertising design 25 higher vocational majors such as production and production. A professional system with coal as the mainstay covering power, machinery, computer, economics, cultural management and other fields has been formed. In 2007, the coal mining technology major was selected by the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education as a key construction major for higher vocational colleges in Yunnan Province, and the coal mine safety training base was approved as a provincial key construction training base. In 2008, the "Coal Mine Safety Training Base" of the college was listed as a vocational education training base construction project supported by the central finance by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education.
