Wenshan College was founded in 1947, and its predecessor was the National Southwest Normal School that moved from Zhaotong, Yunnan to Wenshan. Over the past 70 years, the school's development has gone through several stages of Wenshan Normal School, Wenshan Renmin University, Wenshan Teachers College, and Wenshan Teachers College. Mr. Chu Tunan, the former vice chairman of the National People's Congress, personally inscribed the school's name. In 2009, the school became a full-time general undergraduate university. In 2018, it successfully passed the qualification assessment of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education. In 2019, it became a demonstration college for the training of applied undergraduate talents in Yunnan Province.
Wenshan College is located in the urban area of Wenshan City, Yunnan Province, backed by the towering Xihua Mountain with thirty-six peaks arranged like a halberd, facing the mother river-Panlong River that winds through the city. The school covers an area of 877.25 acres, and the public school building area is 31.65 square meters; the total value of teaching, scientific research equipment and information equipment is 536 million yuan, and the library has 2.06 million books. For more than 70 years, the school has sent more than 40,000 undergraduate and junior college graduates to the society, trained more than 40,000 students of all levels and types, and cultivated the "Fourth National Moral Model" Shuang Fuwei. The school has 44 undergraduate majors and 13 junior majors, covering 10 disciplines including science, engineering, agriculture, literature, education, art, history, law, management, and medicine.
