Southwest Forestry University is the only independent undergraduate forestry university in western my country. The school originated in the Forestry Department of Yunnan University in 1938 and was founded in 1958 by Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College. In 1973, the Forestry Department of Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College merged with the Beijing Forestry College which moved south to Kunming to establish the school’s predecessor, Yunnan Forestry College. In 1983, it was renamed Southwest Forestry College, and it is one of the six regional forestry undergraduate colleges directly under the Ministry of Forestry. In 2000, the school was adjusted by the colleges and universities directly under the State Forestry Administration to a joint construction between the central government and the local government with provincial-based management. In 2010, it was renamed Southwest Forestry University approved by the Ministry of Education. In 1981, it became the first batch of master's degree-granting units approved by the State Council. In 2013, it was approved as a doctoral degree-granting unit. In 2017, it was newly added to recommend outstanding undergraduate graduates to study at regular postgraduate colleges without exams. It is a university of the National Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program and the Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program.
The school covers an area of 2703 acres, has 30 teaching units, and has 18,388 full-time students. There are 1,219 faculty members, including 477 teachers with senior professional titles, 57 doctoral supervisors, 668 master supervisors, 300 off-campus supervisors, 1 State Council Special Allowance expert, and 1 first-level expert of the National Hundred and Thousand Talents Project. 4 new century outstanding talents from the Ministry of Education, 1 Yunling Scholar, 3 Yunling Industrial Technology Leaders, 5 Provincial Outstanding Professional and Technical Talents with Outstanding Contributions, 4 Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Talents, Provincial Young and Middle-aged Academic and Technical Leaders There are 17 people, 14 reserve talents, and 10 experts enjoying special allowances from the provincial government.
The school has established the national and local joint engineering research center for efficient utilization of forestry biomass resources, the international joint research center for biomass materials, the national plateau wetland research center, the Yunnan Institute of Biodiversity, and the provincial academician expert workstation and other scientific research platforms above the provincial and ministerial level.26 There are 17 innovation teams of various types recognized by the superior authorities. The school has 3 post-doctoral research stations, 3 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 13 first-level discipline master programs, 5 professional master programs, 6 key disciplines of the State Forestry Administration, and 1 key (cultivation) discipline of the State Forestry Administration There are 5 provincial key disciplines and 74 undergraduate majors.
The school is committed to cultivating "morality, knowledge, skills, and individuality" as one of the applied high-quality talents with practical ability and innovative spirit. "Forestry undergraduate talent training mechanism reform and path innovation" won the second prize of national teaching achievement, and the forestry specialty basic experimental teaching center was approved as a national experimental teaching demonstration center.
