Yunnan University

Yunnan University was founded in 1922 as a private Donglu University. It was renamed the Provincial Yunnan University in 1934 and the National Yunnan University in 1938. It was one of the first comprehensive universities established in the western frontier of my country. In 1937, the famous mathematician and educator Xiong Qinglai became the principal. A large number of famous scholars were hired to teach in the school, which laid the foundation for the school's higher development and profound academic background, and created the first glorious period in the history of Yunda. In the 1940s, Yunnan University has developed into a large-scale and internationally influential one of China's famous universities, including liberal arts, law, science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine. In 1946, "Encyclopedia Britannica" listed Yunnan University as one of the 15 most influential universities in the world in China.


In the 1950s, the departments were adjusted, and some important and distinctive departments of Yunnan University, such as aviation, civil engineering, law, railway, etc. were removed and merged into the Beijing Institute of Aeronautics, Sichuan University, Southwest University of Political Science and Law, Changsha Railway Institute, etc. Colleges and universities; engineering, medicine, agriculture, etc. successively established independent schools, and gradually developed into today's Kunming University of Science and Technology, Kunming Medical University, Yunnan Agricultural University, Southwest Forestry University and other universities. In 1958, Yunnan University was placed under the administration of Yunnan Province by the Central Ministry of Higher Education. In 1978, Yunnan University was designated by the State Council as one of the 88 key universities in the country.


After the reform and opening up, Yunnan University has made considerable progress. In 1996, it was listed among the first batch of national "211 Project" key universities. In 2001, it was listed as a key university for the development of the western region. In 2004, it became a key university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Yunnan Province. All 19 secondary indicators were assessed as A, and it was rated as an excellent school for undergraduate teaching by the Ministry of Education. In 2012, it became a national implementing institution of the “Basic Ability Construction Project for Midwestern Universities” and the “Elevation of Comprehensive Strength Project for Midwestern Universities” in 2016. Yunnan University has 26 colleges, 10 research institutes, 2 independent colleges, 1 affiliated hospital, and graduate school.
