Xinjiang Vocational University was founded in 1962. Its predecessor, Xinjiang Amateur University for Workers, was co-founded by the Autonomous Region Federation of Trade Unions and the Autonomous Region Education Department under the kind care of General Wang Zhen. In 1991, the school was renamed "Xinjiang Workers University". In 1996, it was approved by the former State Education Commission as the first batch of pilot colleges for higher vocational education in the country and began to recruit higher vocational students in 1997. In 2000, the school was renamed "Xinjiang Vocational University". In 2007, the Ministry of Education approved the name change and filed. In 2000 and 2005, Xinjiang Commercial Technical School and Xinjiang Mongolia Normal School were merged into Xinjiang Vocational University.

At the beginning of this century, Xinjiang Vocational University entered a new stage of higher vocational education reform and development. In 2010, the school passed the evaluation of talent training in higher vocational colleges by the Ministry of Education.
