The school was founded in 1962, formerly known as Kashgar Teachers College. In the 16 years from its establishment to the end of 1978, the school was composed of 5 higher education institutions in the autonomous region (Xinjiang University, Xinjiang Institute of Technology, Bayi Agricultural College, Xinjiang Medical College, Xinjiang The only higher normal college in Kashgar Teachers College) has played an important and irreplaceable role in basic education, social stability and economic development in Xinjiang, especially in southern Xinjiang. In 1978, the school was upgraded to an undergraduate college and was renamed Kashgar Teachers College. In 2012, it was listed as a university in the basic capacity building project of universities in the central and western regions. In April 2015, it was renamed Kashgar University.
