Yili Normal University is an ordinary higher normal school under the management of the Education Department of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and has a long history. The predecessor of the school was the Xinjiang Provincial Yili Technical College established in 1948. It was renamed Yili Normal School in 1953. In 1980, it was upgraded to an ordinary undergraduate college under the approval of the State Council and named Yili Normal University. In December 2018, it was renamed Yili Normal University with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
The school has the School of Chinese Language and Literature, the School of Mathematics and Statistics, the School of Physics and Technology, the School of Electronics and Information Engineering, the School of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences, the School of Biological and Geographic Sciences, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Marxism, the School of Law, the School of Physical Education, There are 14 colleges (departments), including the College of Art, the College of Tourism, History and Culture, the College of Educational Science, and the Department of Preparatory Education.
