The Chengdu Institute of Physical Education was founded in 1942 and was formerly known as the Sichuan Provincial Sports College. In 1950, the People's Government took over and changed its name to Chengdu Sports College. In 1953, it was transformed into the Southwest Institute of Physical Education, and in 1956 it became more current. The school was originally affiliated to the State Sports General Administration. It was transferred to the local government in 2001.
