Southwest Petroleum University

Southwest Petroleum University is the second petroleum undergraduate college established by the People's Republic of China. It is an institution of higher learning jointly established by the central and local governments and mainly managed by the Sichuan Provincial People's Government. In 2013, the school was selected as one of the 100 universities selected for the "National Central and Western University Basic Capacity Building Project". In September 2017, it was selected as one of the first batch of "Double First Class" world-class discipline construction universities in the country.

In the mid-to-late 1950s, my country’s petroleum industry was quite backward and far from meeting the needs of national construction, which attracted great attention from the party and the country. Chairman Mao Zedong visited the Longchang Gas Mine in Sichuan Province. Deng Xiaoping, general secretary of the Secretariat, personally presided over the exploration and development of Sichuan oil and gas fields. In March 1958, three exploratory wells located in Dongguan of Nanchong, Wusheng of Guang'an, and Daying of Suining spewed out high-yield oil streams, shaking the country. The Minister of Petroleum Industry, General Yu Qiuli, took office in Nanchong and started the Sichuan-China Petroleum Contest. In order to speed up the development of oil and natural gas resources in Sichuan, and to train technical cadres for the development of the oil and gas industry in the Southwest Cooperation Zone, the state has decided to establish a second petroleum university, located in Nanchong, an important town in northern Sichuan, where the Sichuan-China Petroleum Campaign Headquarters is located.

In August 1958, the Ministry of Petroleum Industry first recruited 643 first-time students in Chengdu, and then appointed Comrade Ma Zai, Director of the Infrastructure Department, to lead a group of young experts and cadres to Nanchong to plan the establishment of the college. On September 20, the Ministry of Petroleum Industry and the Ministry of Education reported to the State Council for approval and formally approved the establishment of Sichuan Petroleum Institute. Since then, along with the construction and development of my country's oil and gas industry, the school has begun the practice of breaking the rules of running the school after having students first.

In July 1970, the school was renamed Southwest Petroleum Institute with the approval of the State Council. In March 2000, the school was transferred to Sichuan Province, which was jointly built by the central and local governments and managed by the Sichuan Provincial People's Government. Approved by the Ministry of Education in 2003, the school was upgraded to a university, and in December 2005, it was officially renamed Southwest Petroleum University. On November 1, 2018, the People's Government of Sichuan Province, China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) jointly signed a strategic cooperation framework for jointly building a world-class discipline construction university (Southwest Petroleum University) protocol.

The school began to recruit graduate students in 1978, and was granted the right to confer a doctorate in 1986. In 1988, Oil and Gas Field Development Engineering (United Petroleum Mechanical Engineering) became the first batch of national key disciplines. In 1989, the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Development Engineering was approved for construction, 1991 Established a post-doctoral research mobile station.

After more than 60 years of construction, the school has now developed into a university with a focus on work, coordinated development of multiple disciplines, outstanding advantages in oil and gas, and distinctive features. The main petroleum disciplines are at the leading level in the country.

The school currently has 19 teaching colleges (departments) and 1 engineering training center. Subjects and majors cover 8 disciplines: science, engineering, management, economics, literature, law, education, and art.
