Xihua University is a provincial key comprehensive university with a complete range of disciplines and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. It is a key support university for the basic capacity building project for universities in the central and western regions of the country. The school was founded in 1960 and was named Sichuan Agricultural Machinery College at that time. It was one of the agricultural machinery undergraduate colleges established in seven regions across the country. In 1978, it was listed as one of the key universities in Sichuan Province. In 1983, it was renamed Sichuan Institute of Technology. In 2003, Sichuan Institute of Technology merged with Chengdu Normal College to form Xihua University. In 2008, Sichuan School of Economics and Management was merged into Xihua University as a whole.
In 1982, the school became the first batch of units with the right to confer bachelor's degrees. In 1985, it began to recruit master's students. In 1990, it had the right to confer master's degrees.
The school has four campuses. The main campus is located at No. 999, Jinzhou Road, Tuqiao, Jinniu District, Chengdu; Pengzhou Campus is located at No. 276, South Street, Tianpeng Town, Pengzhou City; Rennan Campus is located at No. 37, Section 3, Renmin South Road, Chengdu; Yibin Campus is located in Yibin No. 1, Section 3, University City Road, Lingang Economic and Technological Development Zone. The campus covers an area of nearly 4,000 acres, the library area is more than 50,000 square meters, there are more than 2.6 million paper documents, and more than 8 million e-books. It is one of the 100 colleges and universities that collects the "Chinese Reconstructed Rare Books Series".
