The school was founded in 1896, formerly known as the Imperial Chinese Railway College of Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway College (Imperial Chinese Railway College). One of the major sources, it is well-known both at home and abroad as "Tangshan Jiaotong University" and "Tangyuan", known as "Oriental Cornell". Comrade Mao Zedong inscribed the school name for the school. Since its establishment, the school has successively named Tangshan Institute of Technology (Cheng), Jiaotong University, Guizhou Branch of National Jiaotong University, China Jiaotong University, Northern Jiaotong University, Tangshan Railway Institute and so on. In 1952, the colleges and departments of the country were adjusted, and some faculty members of the school were transferred to sister colleges such as Tsinghua University and Tianjin University. In 1964, they moved to Sichuan in accordance with the spirit of the “third line” construction of the central government. In 1972, they were renamed Southwest Jiaotong University and moved in 1989. Chengdu. There are three campuses in Jiuli, Xipu and Emei, covering an area of more than 5,000 acres. The Xipu campus is the main campus.
