The Air Force Military Medical University of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (Fourth Military Medical University) is a national key university that trains high- and mid-level medical professionals. The school was named the Fourth Military Medical University in 1952, merged with the former Fifth Military Medical University in 1954, and transferred to the Air Force in 2017. The former Air Force Aviation Medical Research Institute was merged to form the Air Force Military Medical University. The Air Force Aviation Medical Research Institute merged to form the Air Force Characteristic Medical Center, which is affiliated to the school. The school was identified as one of the first batch of 20 key universities in the country by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1959. In 1995, it entered the ranks of the military's key construction academies. In 1997, it became one of the first 22 "211 Project" key construction universities in the country.
