Xi'an University of Technology is a high-level university jointly built by the central government and the local government and a key construction in Shaanxi Province. The school is one of the important training bases and scientific research centers for senior professionals in the water conservancy and hydropower, equipment manufacturing, and printing and packaging industries in Northwest my country.
The predecessor of school was Beijing Institute of Mechanical Engineering, established in 1958, and Shaanxi University of Technology, established in 1960. Beijing Institute of Mechanical Engineering is formed by Beijing Machine Manufacturing School, Beijing Industrial Management School and Beijing Industrial Cadre School. The history of the three schools can be traced back to the National Beiping Advanced Industrial Vocational School established in 1945, the Beiping Municipal Advanced Commercial Vocational School established in 1937, and the Shenyang Industrial Cadre School established in 1952. Beijing Institute of Mechanical Engineering is affiliated to the First Ministry of Machinery Industry. It moved to Hanzhong, Shaanxi in 1969 and Xi'an in 1972. Shaanxi University of Technology is formed with the Department of Water Conservancy and Textile Department of Jiaotong University (Xi'an part) as the main body, combined with Xi’an Institute of Chemical Technology, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, and Xi’an Mechanical College. The history of the Department of Water Conservancy can be traced back to its establishment in 1895 Water Conservancy Group, Department of Civil Engineering, Beiyang University. In 1972, Beijing Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Shaanxi University of Technology merged to form Shaanxi Institute of Mechanical Engineering, which was subordinate to the Ministry of First Machinery Industry. In 1994, the school was approved to change its name to Xi’an University of Technology. In 1998, the school was transferred to Shaanxi Province, and the management system was adjusted to be jointly established by the central government and Shaanxi Province, with Shaanxi Province as the main management system. In 2002, Shaanxi Province approved Xi'an Instrument Industry School as a whole to be merged into Xi'an University of Technology. The school takes over the National Peking Advanced Industrial Vocational School in 1949 as the school year, and May 1st is the school day.

Postgraduate education began in 1960, and the graduate school was established in 2011. There are currently 14 first-level disciplines for doctoral degrees and 41 second-level disciplines for doctoral degrees.
