China University of Petroleum is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is one of the universities that has established a graduate school for the key construction of the national "211 Project" and the construction of the "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform". Tracing back to the history of the school, at the beginning of the founding of New China in 1953, petroleum resources were urgently needed for the construction of the national economy, and professional talents were urgently needed for the development of the petroleum industry. In this situation, based on the Department of Petroleum Engineering of Tsinghua University, the relevant faculty and educational conditions of Peking University, Tianjin University, Dalian Institute of Technology and other famous universities have been gathered to form the first petroleum higher education institution in New China—Beijing The Petroleum Institute, affiliated to the Ministry of Fuel Industry, was one of the eight famous colleges in Beijing at that time. In October 1960, the school was identified as a national key university. In 1969, the school moved to Dongying, Shandong, where the Shengli Oilfield is located, and was renamed East China Petroleum Institute. In June 1981, the Graduate School was established on the original site of Beijing Petroleum Institute. In 1988, the school was renamed the University of Petroleum and gradually formed a school structure in Shandong and Beijing. In 1997, the University of Petroleum formally entered the ranks of the first batch of key universities in the national "211 Project". In 2000, the University of Petroleum was placed under the Ministry of Education by China National Petroleum Corporation. In June 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school established a graduate school. In October 2003, the Ministry of Education and the four major national oil companies signed an agreement to jointly build a Petroleum University. In August 2004, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of the Qingdao campus of the University of Petroleum (East China). In January 2005, the school was renamed China University of Petroleum. In August 2005, the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Shandong Province signed an agreement to jointly build China University of Petroleum (East China). In October 2006, the school passed the evaluation of the undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education with "excellent" results. In 2010, the school became one of the first batch of 61 pilot universities in the country to implement the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" and one of the 32 ministerial universities undertaking the national "Professional Degree Graduate Education Comprehensive Reform Pilot Work". In April 2014, the Ministry of Education and China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petrochemical Corporation, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, Shenhua Group Co., Ltd., Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum (Group) Co., Ltd. and other five major energy enterprise group companies signed a joint construction China University of Petroleum agreement. The school has two campuses in Qingdao and Dongying, with a total campus area of 5,024 mu, a building area of 1.4 million square meters, and a library collection of 3.15 million books. The Qingdao campus is located in the charming sailing capital and coastal city, Qingdao, which enjoys a high reputation. The school has five national key disciplines, including mineral survey and exploration, oil and gas well engineering, oil and gas field development engineering, chemical technology, and oil and gas storage and transportation engineering, and two national key (cultivation) disciplines, including earth exploration and information technology, and industrial catalysis. There are currently nearly 19,000 full-time undergraduates, more than 9,500 postgraduates, more than 1,000 international students, and more than 87,000 full-time online students. Since the establishment of the school, the school has always adhered to the basic task of personnel training, and has strived to build a quality brand for personnel training, which has won a wide social reputation.
