Qinghai Normal University is the only normal university in Qinghai Province. The school is a doctoral degree awarding unit, a Tibetan-Chinese bilingual talent training base of the National Civil Affairs Commission, a national high-level athlete training institution, an outstanding teacher training project unit of the Ministry of Education, a demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform by the Ministry of Education, and a key support for education aid by the Ministry of Education Colleges and universities, the first batch of national civilized campuses, and the advanced collectives of national unity.
Qinghai Normal University was founded in 1956. The Qinghai Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government established the Qinghai Teachers College in accordance with the central government's policy of "training on the spot and supplying on the spot". In 1958, it was upgraded to Qinghai Normal University, which mainly held undergraduate education. In 1984, it was renamed "Qinghai Normal University" with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 1994, the school was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to become a master's degree-granting unit. In 1997, the former Qinghai Normal University and Qinghai College of Education merged to form the new Qinghai Normal University. From 2000 to 2004, Qinghai National Teachers College and Qinghai Bank School were merged one after another. In 2013, the school was approved as a doctoral degree-granting unit.
The school has two campuses in the west and north of the city, covering an area of 1,13.26 acres. Among them, the Chengbei campus covers an area of 1,139.55 mu. It was completed and put into use in October 2016. It is the construction project with the largest single investment in education in Qinghai Province since the founding of the People's Republic of China. The total assets of teaching and research equipment is 262.07 million yuan. The total number of paper documents in the collection is 1,150,900 volumes.
13,450 full-time students. Among them, 8,960 are undergraduate students, 2,983 are junior college students, 1,086 are full-time master's students, 80 are full-time doctoral students, and 41 are international students. Up to now, more than 100,000 professionals have been trained.
The school has 18 colleges and 3 affiliated high schools. Subjects and majors cover 10 categories including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. It has 3 first-level disciplines, 17 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 10 professional master's degree authorization categories. There are 61 undergraduate majors, including 4 national-level specialty majors.
There are 1,234 faculty and staff (including workers) and 910 professional and technical personnel. Among them, there are 240 professors, 328 associate professors, 27 doctoral supervisors, and 208 master supervisors.
21 experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, 1 young and middle-aged expert with outstanding national contributions, 1 "Hundred Talents Program" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 34 "Kunlun Scholars" of Qinghai Province, and 39 "High-end Innovative Talents Program" of Qinghai Province. There are 46 people in Qinghai Province’s "135 High-level Talent Training Project" talent plan.
There is 1 national teaching team, 1 national quality course, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 2 scientific research and innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, 15 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, and 6 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers , 3 provincial-level humanities and social science bases. There are 33 research institutions (think tanks) including the Xi Jinping Research Center for Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era, Qinghai Silk Road Economic Belt Research Institute, and Panchen Research Institute. The school has won 2 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 first prize of Qinghai Science and Technology Progress Award, 3 second prizes of Qinghai Science and Technology Progress Award, and 2 second prizes of National Teaching Achievement Award. In recent years, the school has undertaken more than 600 national, provincial and ministerial-level scientific research projects, including 1 national science and technology support project.
The school has outstanding characteristics in plateau sports education and training. The women's basketball team has won the CUBA Northwest Division Championship 17 times. Li Chunxiu won the bronze medal in the women's 10 km race walking at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, and Qi Yangshi won the silver medal in the women's 20 km race walking at the 2012 London Olympics. Student Yin Shunjin won the gold medal in the Marathon of the 12th National Games.
The school has established counterpart support cooperation relationships with Shaanxi Normal University, Shandong University, Lanzhou University, Beijing Normal University and other universities. In 2018, a “team-based” assistance system led by Beijing Normal University was formed. Establish cooperation and exchange relations with 26 universities in foreign countries, including Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. From 2014 to 2018, a total of 161 students went abroad to exchange and study.
