Founded in 1949, the school is one of the first 88 national key universities designated by the State Council. In 1981, it was approved as the first batch of master's degree-granting units. In 1996, Fuxin Institute of Mining and Technology was renamed and upgraded to Liaoning University of Engineering and Technology. In 1999, it was approved to establish post-doctoral research.
