Jilin University of the Arts was born in Lu Xun School of Literature and Art, Northeastern University, founded in 1946. In 1948, Northeastern University established the Department of Music. Later, Northeastern University was renamed Northeast Normal University, and the Department of Music was changed to the Department of Music. In 1958, based on the Music Department of Northeast Normal University, the Jilin Art College was established. Since then, it has successively merged five distinctive art schools, including Jilin Provincial Cultural Cadre School, Jilin Provincial Art School, Music and Dance School attached to Jilin Provincial Song and Dance Theater, Jilin City Arts School, and Changchun Film Academy attached to Changchun Film Studio. A comprehensive school-running pattern for cultivating a variety of artistic talents has been formed. In 1978, it was upgraded to a university and renamed Jilin Academy of Arts. In 2000, Jilin Opera School was merged into Jilin Academy of Arts. The college is located in the prosperous area of the city center in Changchun City. It has four campuses: performance, modeling, synthesis, and urban art. There are 13 undergraduate teaching units, including the School of Art Education, the School of Art Management, the School of Popular Music, the School of Traditional Chinese Opera, and the School of Urban Arts. There are 8178 full-time students, including 7295 undergraduates, 53 junior college students, and 830 postgraduates. The college's function of "the cradle of cultivating talents, the base for inheriting culture, the source of artistic innovation, and the window to guide aesthetics" has become increasingly prominent.

The college has a strong faculty. There are 659 faculty members, including 481 full-time teachers and 207 associate professors or above. It employs more than 100 domestic and foreign visiting professors and part-time professors. Since its establishment, the academy has cultivated many outstanding artists and well-known scholars for the country. The college actively develops international art education exchanges and cooperation, and has established friendship schools with 23 well-known art colleges in more than 10 countries and regions, including the United States, Britain, Russia, Canada, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan. The Ministry of Education has successively held Russian Art Master Classes, Changchun International Piano Art Festival, and Changchun International Ceramic Art Exhibition. The Ministry of Education has identified our institute as the only Sino-Russian university art exchange base in the country. In 2012, it led the establishment of Sino-Russian Art University Alliance. At present, the college has carried out 2+2, 3+1 student joint training programs with the University of York and Northumbria University in the United Kingdom, and invited many international high-level artists to perform and work in our college, providing more for teachers and students of the college. More learning and exchange opportunities have further broadened the college’s vision of art education and enhanced the college’s international reputation and influence. The college actively serves the development of society and regional economic and cultural undertakings. Especially in recent years, the college has used the College Art Festival and the University Student Campus Culture and Art Festival as the carrier, combined with the two brand social practice activities of "Elegant Culture into the Community" and "Hundred Schools Aesthetic Education Project", and held concerts and designs every year.
