Tonghua Teachers College

Tonghua Teachers College is the only provincial undergraduate college in the southeast of Jilin Province. It is located in Tonghua City at the foot of Changbai Mountain, on the bank of the Yalu River, and on the border between China and North Korea. According to the needs of the development of education, Tonghua Normal School was changed to Tonghua Teachers College in 1958. The history of Tonghua Normal School can be traced back to the Sixth Normal School of Liaodong Province (Tonghua) established in 1929. In 1978, Tonghua Teachers College was officially upgraded to a general undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education, and was renamed Tonghua Teachers College. The school has always adhered to the school motto of cultivating virtue and keeping up with the times, adhering to the simple educational philosophy, inheriting the Jingyu spirit, building the school, educating people, and serving the school-running characteristics of Changbai Mountain. The school's school-running strategy highlights the advantages of one division, one mountain, one city, one family, one history, and has made important contributions to local economic construction and social development. In 2007, the school successfully passed the evaluation of the undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education. In 2016, the school successfully passed the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education.


   The school covers an area of 59.5 million square meters, with a construction area of 253,500 square meters, teaching and research equipment worth 133,504,500 yuan, and the total collection of books is 2,180,900. There are 20 secondary colleges, 1 teaching department, and 3 school-level research institutes.


   The school recruits students from 27 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country. There are 10,957 full-time undergraduates, 878 junior college students, and 8,479 continuing education students. There are 796 faculty members and 654 full-time teachers, of which 275 have senior professional titles, and 572 have doctoral and master's degrees. 1 national-level candidate for the New Century Talents Project, 2 people enjoy special government allowances from the State Council, 34 outstanding talents including Changbai Mountain scholars, Changbai Mountain skilled teachers, and young and middle-aged professional and technical personnel with outstanding contributions from the province. The school currently has 50 undergraduate majors, including 15 teacher education majors, 25 non-teacher education majors, and 10 concurrently recruited majors, covering literature, science, law, engineering, medicine, education, management, art, and history 9 disciplines; 2 national-level specialty majors (History, Physics), 3 provincial-level brand majors (History, Biological Sciences, Physics), 6 specialty majors (History, Physics, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Chinese Medicine, Chinese Language and Literature), 4 provincial key disciplines (biology, history, education, folklore). There are 1 national quality resource sharing course, 1 national video open course, 14 provincial quality courses, 52 provincial excellent courses, and 1 MOOC on the East-West Alliance. There are 2 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 provincial-level talent training model innovation experimental areas, 1 provincial-level outstanding engineer pilot professional project, and 2 provincial-level off-campus practice bases for college students.


   The school highlights the natural resources and historical and cultural research of Changbai Mountain. It has 18 provincial-level scientific research platforms such as the humanities and social science bases of provincial universities, provincial key laboratories, provincial characteristic new university think tanks, and provincial major demand collaborative innovation centers. In the past three years, he has undertaken 11 national-level projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Social Science Foundation, and the Ministry of Science and Technology; won 6 Jilin Provincial Science and Technology Awards, 7 Jilin Provincial Social Science Outstanding Achievement Awards, and 52 national authorized patents.


The school has established friendly cooperative relations with 43 colleges and educational institutions abroad (overseas), and carried out various forms of undergraduate exchange training programs such as exchange students, 2+2, 3+1, short-term exchanges and paid internships. It has successively cooperated with Greendo University in the United Kingdom to hold the visual communication design major, with the South Korea Yeongnam University to hold the food science and engineering major, and the South Korea's Cheongju University to hold the Sino-foreign joint undergraduate education program in the biological sciences. A total of 133 students have been sent to study abroad, including 28 international students and 16 language students. The school actively implements the strategy of strengthening the province with higher education and the transformation and development work, establishes a medical and health industry professional cluster, a teacher education professional cluster to carry out transformation pilots, and launches pilots of art and food science enrollment. The school actively promotes the integration of production and education, establishing Vantone Business School with Vantone Group, and Jiutai Rural Commercial Bank to establish Jiuzhang Accounting College. The school attaches great importance to the training of students' vocational skills, and through the implementation of the Yingshan Hongdinggang support teaching internship program, it provides teachers education majors with a one-year educational practice time, enhances students' practical ability, and strengthens the connotation of application-oriented talent training.


   The school was once rated as a national-level language standardization demonstration school by the National Language Commission, and as a province-wide university by the Jilin Provincial Department of Education; an advanced collective for employment management, it was awarded the "Civilized Unit of Jilin Province and the Model Collective of Jilin Province for two consecutive terms.
