Northeast Normal University, formerly known as Northeastern University, was established in 1946 and is the first comprehensive university established by the Communist Party of China in the Northeast region. It was located in Changchun in 1949. In 1950, it was renamed Northeast Normal University. It was transferred to Jilin Province in 1958 and was renamed Jilin Normal University. In 1980, it was reclassified to the Ministry of Education and renamed Northeast Normal University. In 1996, it became the first batch of national "211 Project" key construction universities. In 2004, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of a graduate school.

The school takes scientific research as the foundation of the strong school, and has formed outstanding disciplines represented by pedagogy, history, ideological and political education, biology, ecology, chemistry, etc. In recent years, the four disciplines of chemistry, materials science, engineering, plant and zoology have entered the top 1% of ESI's global rankings, and ESI's total articles have been cited as the fourth among universities in the country. There are 1 national engineering laboratory and 6 ministerial-level key laboratories for drug gene and protein screening.
