The college is located in Fuzhou, a famous historical and cultural city known as the "Hometown of Talents" and "Cultural State", on the west bank of the Fuhe River. The college was established in 1978. Its predecessor was the Medical Department of Gandong University, founded in 1958. It was incorporated into the former Jiangxi Medical College in 2000 and merged with Jiangxi Medical College into Nanchang University in 2005.
In December 2016, the reform of the college was officially launched. In October 2019, the college was transferred to Fuzhou City for management as a whole. In May 2020, the Oaks Group obtained the right to host Fuzhou Medical College (funding), and will inject huge amounts of money to improve the college's teaching environment, introduce high-level talents, and establish and perfect a first-class discipline system.
The college’s enrollment is still included in the Nanchang University’s general enrollment plan, and all admitted students are included in the Nanchang University’s student status management, and they are trained under the Nanchang University’s teaching plan and education management model. The college is a teaching college that cultivates specialized medical talents. The existing campus has a land area of more than 777 acres, a building area of more than 270,000 square meters, and more than 8,100 full-time students. The college currently has a two-level education system, undergraduate (second batch) and junior college. The undergraduate has 6 majors including clinical medicine, nursing, medical imaging, stomatology, medical laboratory technology, and pharmacy; the specialties include 9 majors including clinical medicine, nursing, stomatology, general medicine, anesthesia, imaging, laboratory, and pharmacy. Among them, nursing is the first major in six provinces and one city in East China that has a greater influence both inside and outside the province. Clinical medicine is the first demonstration major in Jiangxi Province, and stomatology is a specialty of the college.
The college library has a building area of 13,600 square meters, nearly 2,000 reading seats, more than 600,000 paper collections, and more than 1.1 million e-books. It fully shares the electronic resources of Nanchang University and Fuzhou City Library, and opened the China Journal Network. , Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform and VIP Chinese Science and Technology Journals and other 43 Chinese databases, introduced more than 70 foreign language databases such as EI, ISTP, SCI, SPRINGER, ELSEVIER, PQDD and so on.
The college has two modern experimental buildings with a total construction area of more than 60,000 square meters; it has a "Stomatology Experimental Teaching Center", "Meikang Medical Laboratory Teaching Center" and more than 260 various laboratories, with reasonable layout and complete equipment.
The college currently has 7 affiliated hospitals and clinical hospitals including the First People’s Hospital of Fuzhou (the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University), and 9 teaching hospitals and clinical teaching bases including the First Hospital of Ningbo.
