The predecessor of Nanchang Teachers College was the Jiangxi Secondary Teacher Training School established in 1952. It was renamed Nanchang Teachers College in 1956. Jiangxi Education College was founded in 1958. It was one of the first eight undergraduate colleges and universities established in Jiangxi Province. Comrade Chang Shao Shiping wrote the name of the school with his own handwriting. In 1969, it merged with Jiangxi Normal University and Jiangxi University's liberal arts, and became part of Jinggangshan University and Jiangxi Normal University successively. Jiangxi Institute of Education was restored in 1979. In 2013, it was renamed Nanchang Normal University with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the Provincial Government. There are two campuses in Changbei and Qingshan Lake, covering an area of 613.8 mu.
