Nanchang Institute of Technology is an undergraduate university with distinctive water conservancy characteristics, with the coordinated development of management, science, agronomy, literature, economics, and art, etc., focusing on engineering. The predecessor was Jiangxi Institute of Water Conservancy and Electric Power, founded in 1958. It resumed operation in 1978. It has gone through the junior college of Jiangxi Provincial Water Conservancy and Hydropower School, Water Conservancy Branch of Jiangxi Institute of Technology, Jiangxi Water Conservancy Technical School, Nanchang Water Conservancy and Hydropower Technical School, Nanchang Water Conservancy and Hydropower Technical College, etc. In 2004, it was renamed Nanchang Institute of Technology. In 2005, it was approved as a bachelor degree-granting unit. In 2008, it was jointly established by the People's Government of Jiangxi Province and the Ministry of Water Resources. In 2011, it was successively approved as the "Excellent Engineer Education and Cultivation Plan" university and a pilot university for master's degree postgraduate training, and successfully passed the qualification evaluation of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education. In 2013, it was approved by the General Staff Department and the Ministry of Education as a pilot institution for direct recruitment of non-commissioned officers. In 2016, it passed the review and evaluation of the undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education. In 2017, it became a "first-class discipline" construction university in Jiangxi Province. It was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 2018. It is a master's degree granting unit.
The school is located in a famous historical and cultural city, "the place where the military flag is raised"-Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province.
